It’s amazing what come up when looking at the history of Cliffe. One Bonham Faunce of Cliffe, who died 1552, had a son named Thomas who entered young into the naval service, and was present at attack on the Spanish Amada, 1588. He married Martha daughter of J Baynard, and was Mayor of Rochester in 1609. Not to be out done by this Thomas had two sons: Thomas and Robert. Robert became Sir Robert Faunce after he was was knighted and he married Elizabeth daughter of Sir Richard Head of the Hermitage near Rochester. His younger brother, Thomas, joined the Pilgrim Fathers in America 1640 and died at New Plymouth, aged 99 he has a monument there of him which was newly restored in 1871.
